Muzdalifah

Located in the province of Makkah, Muzdalifah is the valley between Mina and Arafat covering an area of 12.25 square kilometers. After spending the day at Arafat on 9th Dhu’al Hijjah, pilgrims leave for Muzdalifah in Makkah after sunset without offering Maghrib salah. They stay the night in open-air, sleeping in the field and waking up early for fajr prayers. Pilgrims also visit the Masjid Mashar Al-Haram built here that marks the spot where Prophet (pbuh) stayed and supplicated during his farewell pilgrimage. During the farewell pilgrimage, Prophet performed Maghrib and I’sha salah together and spent the night at Masjid Mashar Al-Haram and said,

“Although I am staying here, you may stay anywhere throughout Muzdalifah.” [Muslim]

Muzdalifah is also being referred when Allah mentions in Surah Baqarah in Quran,

“When you leave Arafat, then remember Allah at the Mash’arul Haram.”

It is wajib for a pilgrim to pray Maghrib and I’sha prayer together at I’sha time. Pebbles are also usually collected from Muzdalifah for stoning of devil at Jamarat, although one can collect them from anywhere.
